What it is:
Although we are one of many curriculums out there today rooted in the science of reading (thank goodness there's finally so many!), most of them teach phonics, aka the building blocks of written language, using a print-to-speech approach. That is, the student is taught a letter and then the corresponding speech sound. The latest science of reading research shows the more effective method is to base instruction in a speech-to-print approach where students utilize what comes naturally to them (spoken language) and learn how to map those sounds into print (letters). This cognitive process, known as orthographic mapping, is essential to literacy success and is the foundation of the Systematic Spelling curriculum and what sets us apart from what's more widely available on the market.
Systematic Spelling works wonders! Not only is it sequential and explicit phonics instruction with ample opportunities for guided and independent practice, but each activity engages multiple senses (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) AND multiple cognitive and literacy skills simultaneously to ensure deeper learning and true understanding of the written language system. Understanding how words are structured for spelling reinforces reading concepts and leads to greater achievement and confidence in both reading and spelling skills.
